About Us
Our Mission
At Sankofa Essential Books, spreading the love for reading and black history is our passion. We are an independent, online and pop-up bookshop operating out of Tallahassee, Florida. We feature the most notable new and used books in African American history, culture, and literature for all people, ages and interests.
Founder and Owner, Mrs. Tiffany Williams, is a passionate educator who started SEB in 2020. We aim to uplift our community by promoting literacy and spreading cultural awareness through relevant, thought-provoking diverse books focused on people from the African diaspora.
Our books are essential and relevant works featuring authors from the past and today. Our genres include: literary fiction, non-fiction, children’s and young adult books.
Meaning of Sankofa
The word “Sankofa” is Twi language of the Akan people from Ghana. The word is derived from the words: SAN (return), KO (go), FA (look, seek and take). It means to “go back and reclaim what was taken”. In order to move forward successfully, we must return to our roots, gathering good lessons that will help us achieve future goals.
We are dedicated to presenting books that represent the stories of our ancestors. The past is relevant to our present day journey of triumphs and struggle in the pursuit of truth. Studying our history creates the self-pride necessary to fight negative perceptions. We value the power within the pages of the books we offer in order to build stronger families and communities.
